Everywhere you go.... (I hear Johnny Mathis)
We leave Sarasota on December 7 and sail to Venice where we anchor in a side channel (as usual, our draft precludes us from mooring at the city's dock), and call on our friend Joe who we met in Tarpon Springs a couple weeks back. Joe's trawler is moored at the Venice Yacht Club, and he lives nearby. We share three dozen oysters (!), and later dine with him in a very good restaurant called Crow's Nest.
We motor-sail on Wednesday and arrive at Pelican Bay where we can see hundreds of birds. Unfortunately, we cannot go in - our draft again - so we anchor a mile or so further off channel at Useppa Island where it is vey quiet and serene. The next day, we dinghy to Cabbage Bay for lunch and walk the trails and see some huge turtles. It is lovely here, in Pine Island Sound. We continue by dinghly to the Cayo Costa beach where we gather lettered olives, kitten's paws, venus sunrays, all shells found on the beach to give to Nadia.
Finally, Thursday, we decide to move on and arrive at our destination for spending the end of year celebrations: Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island. It was a little bit tricky coming in as we had fog so dense we could not see 1/10 of a mile in front of us. It reminded the captain of his time prowling Nova Scotia waters. Lucky we had a marine GPS and radar to assist in our navigation.
We are now on a mooring ball at Matanzas Harbor and use our dinghy to go to the beach. It is sunny, warm and very humid. We will be staying here for a month or so to discover the area. We will probably rent a car to visit Cap Cal's father who lives near Fort Lauderdale.
Before I close this page for a month, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year 2010! We are not yet in the mood of Christmas as we are searching every day for snow, but this afternoon during the Happy Hour, we toasted to our friends in the North shoveling 30 cm of snow! VIVE LA RETRAITE! And continue reading our blog!
P.S. Bonne fête Marie-Paule et Guillaume|
